Favorite foodie purchases this quarter

My maternity leave gave me a chance to get my hands dirty in the kitchen more than I have in a while. Also the dairy issue we’ve been having with the little one required more creative cooking. Anyway, the last few months I’ve acquired some new toys and I can’t wait to tell you all about them.

  1. Milk frother

I love this this thing so much. It sat in my amazon wish list for a long time before I finally took the plunge. One day I happened to see it on sale so I bought it. I love that it works with plant-based milk, and the foam stays fluffy instead of falling flat in 30 seconds.

2. Measuring cup set

We got a 1 cup and a 2 cup glass Pyrex measuring cup for our wedding, but as much as we cook, that’s a little limiting. This three piece set was on sale for just under $12, which is a great deal. Even at full price it isn’t bad. We use these guys a ton.

3. OXO scoop

I really don’t know why it took me so long to buy one of these. They are so handy for a number of things. Every time I made lactation cookies I regretted not buying one. My husband finally talked some sense into me and told me to buy it already.

4. Silicone mats

I bought these pretty much just to make baked tofu, but I use them a lot for making roasted yams or russet potatoes. They work really well, and I love that I don’t have to soak potato corpses off my sheet pans anymore.

5. Magnetic measuring spoons

When we moved into our house I thought I was going to be all perfect and space efficient and everything by hanging the measuring spoons from a drywall nail in a cupboard door. The logic was sound, but in reality, it made a terrible racket every time we opened that cupboard. We started keeping the measuring spoons in a drawer, in a very not-organized not-space-efficient way. And then I saw these guys. It never hurts to have three sets of measuring spoons. At least one of them will be organized 🙂

6. Tofu press

This is another one of those things I was thinking about for a while until my husband convinced me to buy it already. His tipping point came when he walked into the kitchen to see a collander with a floursack towel full of tofu in it, topped with a canister of salt. He wondered why I had a pile of garbage on the counter.

This gadget is amazing, and the baked tofu I make with it is unlike any other store bought tofu.

7. Food processor

Last year I upgraded from my Ninja blender set to a Vitamix. I sold the Ninja set, which meant I lost my food processor. I really wasn’t impressed with all those blades, but there were several times when even a mostly incompetent food processor would have been nice. So I got this one (again, on my husband’s urging). I love it so much. I haven’t used the chopper or most of the other extras, but I do love it.
