Second quarter goals 2020

The second quarter of 2020 kind of slipped by without me noticing, which is why I’m sharing this almost a full month into the third quarter. It’s been a crazy year so far, but it has made me so grateful for my health and my family.

We’ve spent a lot of summer afternoons in our backyard, enjoying the best this season has to offer: birds at the bird feeders, juicy grilled peaches, and that childhood feeling where time just kind of stops.

Alright, let’s get on to those goals!

Pre-pregnancy weight

At the end of the second quarter I was about 12 pounds above my pre-pregnancy weight; as of now I am about 4 pounds lighter. I’m giving the light, delicious, summery meals the credit for that last bit of weight loss.

Read 25 books

I only read a couple of books last quarter, but I have some really good ones I hope to finish by October. These are the two I read in the second quarter:

Girl, Wash Your Face (Rachel Hollis)

Girl, Stop Apologizing (Rachel Hollis)

They were both good books, but I must have read them too fast because the specifics aren’t standing out to me at this point. I will say that I was so sad to hear about Rachel and her husband splitting up. I never like to see a marriage go south.

So far I’ve only read (well, finished) six books this year. I have to pick up the pace and read 19 more books this year!

Debt

I’m happy to say that we put $3,900 toward student loans last quarter. I made half of July’s loan payment in June, so that’s part of why it’s a bigger chunk than last time. It’s so incredibly satisfying to see the loan balances going down each month. An MS degree is calling my name, but I really want to finish paying for this degree first.

The car has gone down another $1,500 over the last quarter, so altogether we put $5,400 towards debt last quarter. We were under our goal by $200 last quarter, but we caught up and exceeded the goal!

Savings

I’d like to give as good of a report on savings as I did on loans, but there is a finite amount of money rolling into the checking account each month. We put about $1,700 into savings last quarter. As always, a little is better than nothing. And $1,700 isn’t too shabby!

As far as retirement savings, I contributed just over $2,600 to retirement last quarter.

New roof > new paint

We decided to paint the house instead of putting a new roof on it this year. We do need to get a new roof on soon, but painting the house was a more realistic accomplishment for us this year.

Our goal for the second quarter was to get the paint for the house. We bought two five-gallon buckets of paint during a paint sale, and waited to get the trim colors until the third quarter.

Clean up the basement and garage

My husband went to town one afternoon and turned the garage into a space that could actually be used to park cars! We just need to take a couple of loads of boxes etc. to the recycling center and donate some other boxes of stuff. The basement still needs a lot of work, but that’s a project for another quarter. 🙂
